Picking a good wine is the key to a good wine party or a great evening enjoying it all alone. But the question is how to select a good wine ? The answer lies right here. Here are a few points that will help you to choose the perfect wine for your occasion.

Picking a wine is mostly a personal choice. There are no particular rules as such but here is some help.

The three P’s: Price, Pairing and Preference are the key to selecting a wine.

Price : Your purchasing power is the most important factor. This is because there are wines available in the market that are meant for every pocket and class. You need to decide where you belong. For this decision it is advisable to contact a reliable wine dealer in your city.

Pairing : Next important factor is what food you are going to serve with the wine. For example the red wines pair well with heavy food, the white ones are more suitable for the lighter meals, sweet wines are good combo with sweets or baked items.

Preference : The occasion where you are going to serve the wine is also equally important. Like in a get together or kitty party, go for the wines which do not have heavy effects like white and red wines.

Above all of these points what actually matters is what you personally like or dis like.

For more info on the basics of food and wine combo please follow the link.

To know more on how you can read the wine labels please follow the link.

The Red Wines are one of the most popular types of Wines that are enjoyed all over the world. Here is a brief write-up on the Red Wines.

Red Wines are as the name suggests red in color.

The skin of the grapes are responsible for the red wine’s distinct colors.

The grape varietals that are used to make the Red Wines range from grapes that are reddish, deep purple, and even a beautiful blue in color.

Red wines could have different color variations in red like garnet, almost black, dark red, light red, ruby red, opaque purple, deep violet, maroon.

The color variation depends on the grape type used in the process and the length of time the skin’s pigmentation is in contact with juice.

There are right about 50 key red wine varietals

Some examples of top red wine varietals : Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Shiraz, Sangiovese, Malbec, and Grenache.

Red Wines are called with different names in different regions. For eample – “Bordeaux” is a red wine from France, Chianti- made from the Sangiovese grape varietal is from Italy.

The commonly made Red Wine flavors are : Cherry, Plum, Strawberry, Blackberry, Raspberry, Currant, Cinnamon, Coffee, Cocoa, Mocha and more.

The Red Wines varietals taste excellent with the thoughtful pairing with meat (steak, beef, wild game, stews, grilled salmon, chicken, and lamb etc.

One of the most commonly asked question by almost every new wine drinker is how to store my wine ? Browse here some of the important points that will help you store your wine better – before or after opening the wine bottle and also about the various storage options.

Before Opening

Store all wines away from light, especially direct sunlight and fluorescent fixtures since this can give unpleasant smell to the wine.

Store corked wine bottles on their sides because if they are stored upright for a long time, the corks will dry out, and air will eventually get to the wine, spoiling it.

Keep the storing temperature constant so that their taste and aroma are not affected.

Store the wines in such a way that you don’t need to move them frequently.

Keep the humidity around 70% so that the cork does not dry out and the evaporation is minimized.

Wines “breathe” so never store it with anything that has a strong smell, this can taint the wine.

Not all wines improve with time so don’t store them for too long. For example, white wines should be consumed after 2-3 years of storage.

To enjoy the wine thoroughly right before drinking the wine, allow the temperature to rise or fall to the appropriate serving temperature.

After Opening

Store opened white wine in the refrigerator tightly corked and consume it within 3-5 days.

In the case of a red wine leave it tightly corked outside in a dark place and consume it in a couple of days.

You can keep the dessert wines like Sauternes, most everyday Ports for longer.

Storage Options

If you own one then the wine cellar is the best place to store your wines.

For the everyday wine lover a makeshift closet wine cellar is a good alternative.

Wine cooler/refrigerator will also do as long as it is meant only for the wine storage and you do not open its door frequently.

Learn here some tips to read the wine labels with ease. The Wine labels seem to be a very confusing affair specially to the beginners or inexperienced wine drinkers. The foreign symbols, words and numbers can be very frightening. Many a times we just look at the simple labels with pretty pictures and buy our wine.

To help you understand how to read a wine label better let us take a video example.

Most of the wine labels either the wine is from India or else where has these information on them.

BRAND : The brand name of the wine, this could also be any person’s name like the name of the owner.

CLASS : This defines the type of the wine that is packed in the bottle like red, sparkling, rose, fruit, imitation. It may also have text like “light wine,” “red table wine,” “light white wine,” “sweet table wine,” etc.

ALCOHOL CONTENT : The percentage of alcohol that the wine contains. This is a must on any wines containing more than 14% alcohol by volume.

WHO & WHERE BOTTLED : This gives the address of the winery where the wine was made and the place where it was bottled. The terms like “Cellared,” “Vinted,” or “Prepared” are used to specify these details.

QUANTITY OF CONTENTS : The amount of wine that is bottled is specified either in Oz or ml.

VINTAGE DATING {OPTIONAL} : If it is a vintage wine then the date of when the wine was manufactured is also mentioned on the bottle.

Here you shall find the information on the climate that is favorable for vines in India and also the overall climate in India. This will help you understand better why India is emerging as a good wine producing nation in the world.

India is a vast country and has large climatic variations, so cannot be put just under one zone. The four main climatic zones are :

Alpine Zone: It includes the high altitudes of Himalayas where the temperatures are low and it is cold.

Sub Tropical: Includes the northern part of India. Here the summers are hot and wet while in winter temperature may drop down to freezing point in higher ranges.

Tropical: This region experiences average to high rainfall.

Arid: This zone has high temperature and low rainfall.

So as you can see the Indian climate has so many variations. And in these some regions prove to be a very good environment for the wine grapes cultivation. The grapes that are used for the production of good quality wine need sunlight, fairly fertile soil, and moderate temperatures, which are seen in some regions of India like Nashik, Sangli in Maharashtra. These are best grown on the slopes of the mountains.

Explore here some useful info on the basic rules of food and wine matching. Since long years there have only been two preferred food and wine combination : ‘red wine with beef’ and ‘white wine with fish or poultry’. The other combination is merely “any wine with any food as long as you like it”.

But it is not so once you understand the simple logic and principle behind it you can confidently match foods and wines. Below are a few important rules that will help you in perfect food and wine matching.

If each bite of food that you have selected replaces the taste of the wine and each sip of wine replaces the taste of the food then it is a good match.

However in a poor match, either the selected food or the wine is so dominant that it completely suppresses the taste of the other and only its taste remains in the mouth throughout the meal.

Always pair food and wine depending on their taste and not their smell or aroma.

The best and simplest way to match foods with wines is to look for sweetness, acidity or bitterness in the food and serve wines that have the same characteristics.

Some of the golden combination of food and wine can be :

White wines {Acidic in nature} usually pair well with most seafood.

Red Wines {High acid levels} are usually very good pairings with grilled seafood and with most red sauces (tomato based).

White wines that have some amount of sweetness taste good with similar type of foods.

Red wines with an amount of sweetness, bitterness go well with food that are either sweet or bitter in taste.
