  • Fortified Wines are the wines to which a distilled beverage like brandy has been added.
  • The Fortified Wines are both sweeter, stronger and normally containing about 20% alcohol by volume.

  • The Spirits are produced by means of distillation, while fortified wine is simply wine that has had a spirit added to it.
  • In the USA, the Fortified wines are often termed dessert wines to avoid association with hard drinking.
  • The French call Fortified Wines by the name of “Vins de liqueur”.
  • The various styles of fortified wine – Vermouth from France, Marsala from Italy, Sherry from Spain, and Madeira and Port from Portugal.
  • The cheap, low-quality fortified wines are also available in the market.
  • These are called as the Low-end fortified wines which are generally used for intoxication purposes.
  • The Low-end fortified wines are also called as “hooch,” “street wine,” “fortified wine,” “bum wine,” or “ghetto wine.”
