How To Store Wine
One of the most commonly asked question by almost every new wine drinker is how to store my wine ? Browse here some of the important points that will help you store your wine better – before or after opening the wine bottle and also about the various storage options.
Before Opening
- Store all wines away from light, especially direct sunlight and fluorescent fixtures since this can give unpleasant smell to the wine.
- Store corked wine bottles on their sides because if they are stored upright for a long time, the corks will dry out, and air will eventually get to the wine, spoiling it.
- Keep the storing temperature constant so that their taste and aroma are not affected.
- Store the wines in such a way that you don’t need to move them frequently.
- Keep the humidity around 70% so that the cork does not dry out and the evaporation is minimized.
- Wines “breathe” so never store it with anything that has a strong smell, this can taint the wine.
- Not all wines improve with time so don’t store them for too long. For example, white wines should be consumed after 2-3 years of storage.
- To enjoy the wine thoroughly right before drinking the wine, allow the temperature to rise or fall to the appropriate serving temperature.
After Opening
- Store opened white wine in the refrigerator tightly corked and consume it within 3-5 days.
- In the case of a red wine leave it tightly corked outside in a dark place and consume it in a couple of days.
- You can keep the dessert wines like Sauternes, most everyday Ports for longer.
Storage Options
- If you own one then the wine cellar is the best place to store your wines.
- For the everyday wine lover a makeshift closet wine cellar is a good alternative.
- Wine cooler/refrigerator will also do as long as it is meant only for the wine storage and you do not open its door frequently.
