Rise Of Wine In India

IndiaWines presents to you a brief article on the rise of the Wine industries in India or history of Wines in India.

  • The Wine was believed to have been introduced in India by the Persian traders sometime in the 4th millennium BC.
  • During the Vedic period of the 2nd and 1st millennium, the Aryans tribes were known to take a wine like beverage for intoxication.
  • The Vedas mention about wines that were made by using some type of rice and fermented with honey.
  • In the centuries that would follow, wine became the privileged drink of the Kshatriya or noble class.
  • Under British rule during the Victorian era, viticulture and wine making was strongly encouraged in India.
  • In those days the vineyards were planted extensively through the Baramati, Kashmir and Surat regions.
  • However in the later years all the vineyards were destroyed for some unknown reasons.
    The turning part of the modern Indian wine industry occurred in early 1980s with the founding of Chateau Indage in the state of Maharashtra.
  • With the assistance of French winemakers, Chateau Indage began to import Vitis vinifera grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot blanc, Pinot noir and Ugni blanc and started making still and sparkling wines.
  • Today there are a good number of wineries established in various parts of the country like Nashik, Sangli, Bangalore etc.
